About FontForThat. A font choice you can explain.
FontForThat is made by a small team building practical font tools. We combine measured comparisons with clear licence summaries so you can choose a free font and understand the trade-offs.

Start with the job, leave with a font.
You may need a free alternative to a familiar typeface, a font for an invitation, or lettering in the style of a film or game. Each route should end with a usable font, a source link and an explanation of why it was selected.
The alternative finder searches the names we have data for. The licence checker answers a different question: whether a specific free font can be used on a website, in an app, for a logo, in print or on products you sell. The examples let you try your own words before leaving for the font’s source.
Data first. Editorial judgement where it belongs.
Our team maintains the measurement pipeline, the selection rules, the explanatory text and this website. Similarity measurements compare letters. Task pages combine measurable properties with rules suited to the job. Brand selections are checked by eye and explained as style choices.
Those are different kinds of evidence. A laboratory score belongs beside a measured comparison; a judgement about lettering is labelled as a style selection. A typeface without measurements receives no invented score.
Independent of the names we compare.
FontForThat is not affiliated with the typeface owners, font services or brands named in its comparisons. Typeface and brand names identify the subject of a page; they do not imply endorsement.
A free font in a similar lettering style is not the original brand lettering. Permission to use a font also does not grant permission to use someone else’s trademark. The font’s own source and licence remain the place to check the release you intend to use.
A useful starting point, with visible limits.
The measured collection is limited to fonts for which the laboratory has a licensed installation. FontForThat does not distribute paid or system font files. An original sample may use a font already installed on your device, an image allowed by the source record, or a written description.
Scores describe the tested renderings, not every weight, language, operating system or line of text. The source records let you inspect the evidence and the limitations before choosing a font.
