Angry letters look made in a hurry or with force: a rough brush, a stencil, slanted impact capitals or worn, broken edges. Not horror, and not simply the heaviest fonts. Angry is our label for these letters; the numbers on each card are measured.

Brush, stencil, impact or worn: choosing an angry font

Permanent Marker is the first pick for a flyer or a sign: blunt felt-marker capitals with an x-height of 0.59 em. For a slogan sprayed through a stencil, Protest Guerrilla is the narrower of the two stencils at 0.48 em a letter and Black Ops One the wider at 0.61 em. Bangers shouts like a comic cover and Racing Sans One leans forward for speed, both strong for a band or team name, and Road Rage is the narrowest face here, 0.28 em a letter, for a long word on a poster. Every pick comes in a single weight, so choose the face, not a bolder setting.

Rough brush & marker

3 fonts: Permanent Marker, Protest Revolution, and Knewave

Fast strokes with ragged, dry edges: a sign painted or scrawled in a hurry.

For protest signs, a punk flyer or a slogan written on a wall.

Knewave is the heaviest of the 3, with ink on 85% of the letter box, and Protest Revolution the narrowest at 0.48 em a letter.

Stencil

2 fonts: Black Ops One and Protest Guerrilla

Heavy letters cut by stencil bridges: the look of a crate, a uniform or a sprayed slogan.

For a sprayed slogan, crate labels or a gym name.

Protest Guerrilla and Black Ops One both carry ink on 70% of the letter box, and Black Ops One is the widest at 0.61 em a letter.

Impact & comic

2 fonts: Bangers and Racing Sans One

Heavy, slanted or squared letters with sharp corners: a shout, a punch, speed.

For a fight-night poster, a game title or a team name with speed.

Racing Sans One is the heaviest of the 2, with ink on 76% of the letter box, and Bangers the narrowest at 0.42 em a letter.

Worn & spiked

3 fonts: Road Rage, Metal Mania, and Rubik Spray Paint

Chipped, sprayed or spiked edges over solid letters: rough, but not dripping horror.

For a metal band logo, a grunge poster or a shirt that should look worn.

Rubik Spray Paint is the heaviest of the 3, with ink on 85% of the letter box, and Road Rage the narrowest at 0.28 em a letter.

Questions about angry fonts

Which angry font should I start with?

Permanent Marker (rough brush & marker), Black Ops One (stencil), Bangers (impact & comic), and Road Rage (worn & spiked) open the groups. Permanent Marker heads the page, with letters 0.55 em wide on average, an x-height of 0.59 em and ink on 56% of the letter box.

Can I print angry fonts on merch I sell?

Yes: 9 of them are under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and Permanent Marker is under the Apache License 2.0; both licences allow posters, flyers and protest signs, shirts, merch and stickers sold, and a band, gym or team name.

Are angry fonts the same as horror fonts?

No. The 10 here look forceful rather than frightening: rough brush, stencil cuts, slanted capitals and worn edges. Dripping, creeping letters belong to the Halloween fonts page, and no Halloween pick and no face in the lab’s spooky style stands on this one.

Which of these angry fonts is the heaviest?

Rubik Spray Paint, with ink on 85% of the letter box, level with Knewave; Protest Revolution is the lightest of the 10 angry fonts, at 43%.

How were these angry fonts chosen?

Faces Google tags as distressed or stencil and the lab’s graffiti faces, without cute, horror, blackletter, script and comic faces. A pool to look through, not a measure of anger: every pick is chosen by eye. 36 fonts of the catalogue pass that rule. We set “Out of my way!” in each of them, and in other candidates, on contact sheets, then chose 10 different families by eye: 6 from the pool and 4 added by hand, with 40 candidates left out for a stated reason.
