Cute, playful, fun and whimsical letters on one page: round and plump, bouncing along the line, drawn by hand or curled like a storybook. Cute & playful is our label for these letters; the numbers on each card are measured.

Plump, bouncy, handwritten or whimsical: picking a playful font

Fredoka is the all-round pick: round, plump letters in 5 weights that stay cute from a sticker to a poster. For a title that has to be loud, Luckiest Guy sets heavy cartoon capitals with ink on 69% of the letter box, and Kavoon is darker still at 74%, with a lowercase for packaging. Playpen Sans is the handwriting for a paragraph, with 8 weights from 100 to 800, and Sniglet is set here in its extra-bold 800 for labels. Keep Emilys Candy and Mystery Quest for a title or a name: each comes in one weight, and their curled tails are the point.

Questions about cute & playful fonts

Which cute font should I start with?

Fredoka (round & plump), Luckiest Guy (bouncy), Playpen Sans (handwritten), and Emilys Candy (whimsical) open the groups. Fredoka heads the page, with letters 0.51 em wide on average, an x-height of 0.48 em and ink on 45% of the letter box.

Can I sell stickers and shirts made with these cute fonts?

Yes: 10 of them are under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and Luckiest Guy is under the Apache License 2.0; both licences allow party invitations, posters and school projects, stickers, toys, packaging and shirts sold, and a shop, café or children’s brand name.

Can I paste these cute fonts into an Instagram bio?

Not as text: Fredoka, Gluten and the other 9 are font files, not the restyled Unicode letters that paste into a bio. Set your words in one of them in a design app and post the image, or put the font on your own site, where its licence allows it.

Which of these cute & playful fonts has the most weights?

Gluten, with 9 weights from 100 to 900; then Playpen Sans with 8 and Fredoka with 5. Luckiest Guy, Kavoon, Joti One, Indie Flower, Emilys Candy, and Mystery Quest come in a single weight each.

How were these cute & playful fonts chosen?

The lab’s comic and cute faces and the faces Google tags as wacky, without the bubble letters (their own task page), spooky, gothic and pixel faces. 52 fonts of the catalogue pass that rule. We set “Bubbles, jelly beans & giggles” in each of them, and in other candidates, on contact sheets, then chose 11 different families by eye: 10 from the pool and 1 added by hand, with 26 candidates left out for a stated reason.
